Over 1.4 lakh km, a 2020 Tata Nexon EV cost about ₹1.37 per km in charging, against roughly ₹5 per km in diesel for the same owner's Ford EcoSport. Including insurance and all service, the EV's total running cost was ₹2.60 per km. That doesn't include its higher purchase price, which decides whether you come out ahead.
Charge at home for daily driving and use DC fast chargers for trips. Home charging cost about ₹1 per km for a 30 kWh Nexon EV versus ₹1.2–5 per km on public fast chargers, and lower charging power is gentler on the battery. Fast charging wins only on time.
Most EV owners should buy Roadside Assistance every year and the extended warranty, because one failed high-voltage part costs more than the extension. A Battery Cover or EV Protect insurance add-on is worth it only if it covers parts that neither your warranty nor standard insurance does.
